Types of Government Grants
Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits
Social Security Insurance is one of the largest benefits anyone with a disability can get. Disabilities can range from physical to emotional and qualify for benefits. SSI helps with the daily cost of living for those that are unable to work (or are minors) for at least 12 months or that results in death.
USDA Rural Home Grants
The USDA offers grants to persons with disabilities that live in a rural area. The grant helps pay to make a home more accessible. Some USDA Rural Home Grants also help you buy an accessible home if you don’t already own a home. Find more information here.
Division of Coal Mine Workers' Compensation (DCMWC) Assistance
The DCMWC helps coal miners suffering from Black Lung Disease file claims for medical benefits and financial payments if their disease occurred due to working in the mines. The grant also supports surviving spouses of miners that lost their lives due to Black Lung Disease.
Early Intervention Program for Children With Disabilities
This state-run program provides services to children ages 3 and under with physical, mental, cognitive, and social disability help. The program helps pay for appropriate services to help the children at home and through the school system. Check with your local state government for information pertaining to your location.
Grants for Disabled Business Owners
Disabled business owners have several grant options through the Small Business Administration and Grants.gov. Many private foundations also help foster economic stimulation by helping disabled business owners with funding issues.
Special Housing Adaption Grant for Veterans
The SAH helps veterans purchase an accessible home or make changes to their existing home. The grant provides up to $77,307 to help make the home livable for disabled veterans.
Low Income Energy Assistance Grant
Each state offers assistance for low-income families to pay heating and cooling bills. However, they give priority (early application dates) for the disabled. Assistance is offered at both the state and federal level.
How to Apply for Grants for the Disabled
Each grant program has different requirements for disability grants. Visit the appropriate website for the grant you wish to apply for and follow the directions. Start by contacting your local and state government offices to find out what options you have locally as well as any federal options described above.
If you need assistance or are unsure where to start, contact the National Council on Disability, the IRS, or the US Department of Labor.
